Host selection

The bidding process for hosting the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups began in January 2009. National associations had until 2 February 2009 to register their interest.[22] Initially, 11 bids were made for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, but Mexico withdrew from the process, [23][ 24] and Indonesia’s bid was rejected by FIFA in February 2010 after the Indonesian Football Association failed to submit a letter of guarantee from the Indonesian government. Support the bid. Indonesian officials did not rule out a bid for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while Qatar was awarded the 2022 tournament.[citation needed].FIFA World Cup 2022 list
With UEFA’s guarantee of hosting the 2018 event, UEFA members were no longer in contention to host in 2022.[citation needed] Five bids remained for the 2022 FIFA World Cup: Australia, Japan, The 22-member FIFA Executive Committee of Qatar, South Korea, and the United States voted to select the hosts of the two tournaments in Zurich on 2 December 2010. Criticism of host selection
Allegations of bribery and corruption have surfaced in the selection process of FIFA’s executive committee members. These allegations are being investigated by FIFA (see § Bidding corruption allegations below). In May 2011, allegations of corruption within senior FIFA officials raised questions over the legitimacy of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Allegations of corruption have been made regarding how Qatar won the right to host the event. FIFA’s internal investigation and report cleared Qatar of any wrongdoing, but chief investigator Michael J. Garcia has since criticized FIFA’s report on its inquiry as “numerous materially incomplete and misrepresentations”. [32]World Cup 2022 table
In May 2015, Swiss federal prosecutors opened investigations into corruption and money laundering related to the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bids.[33][34] In August 2018, former FIFA president Sepp Blatter claimed that Qatar had “blackmailed have used “opus”, suggesting that the bid committee cheated to win the hosting rights.[35] Some investigations have found that Qatar hired a former CIA officer to host. tried to help secure the 2010 winner, Kevin Chalker, who used to spy on rival bidding teams and key football officials.FIFA World Cup schedule
Qatar has come under heavy criticism for its treatment of foreign workers involved in World Cup preparations, with Amnesty International citing “forced labour” and poor working conditions, [37][38] While many migrant workers have reported paying large sums. [39] The TeaGuardian newspaper reported that many workers were deprived of food and water. They are stripped of their identity papers, and are not paid on time or at all, and some are enslaved. The Guardian estimates that 4,000 workers may die from safety and other causes by the time the competition is held. Between 2015 and 2021, the Qatari government adopted new labor reforms to improve working conditions, including a minimum wage for all workers and the abolition of the welfare system.
Teams

FIFA’s six continental confederations organized their own qualifying competitions. All 211 FIFA member associations were eligible to enter the qualifiers. The Qatari national team, as hosts, automatically qualified for the tournament. However, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) obliged Qatar to participate in the Asian qualifying stage as the first two rounds also serve as qualification for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.[45] Having reached the final stage as group winners, fifth-best second-placed Lebanon progressed instead. France, the reigning World Cup champions, also went through the qualifying stages as usual.
Saint Lucia initially entered CONCACAF qualification but withdrew before their first match. North Korea withdrew from the AFC qualifying round due to safety concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. American Samoa and Samoa both withdrew before the OFC qualification draw. Tonga 2022 Hanga Tonga – Hanga Hapai retreats after eruption and tsunami. Vanuatu and the Cook Islands also withdrew due to travel restrictions due to the spread of COVID-19 among their troops.[citation needed]
Of the 32 nations that have qualified to play in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, 24 have participated in the previous tournament in 2018. [48] Qatar is the only team to make its FIFA World Cup debut, since Italy in 1934. She has become the first host to debut in the tournament. As a result, the 2022 tournament is the first World Cup in which no team has qualified. Through qualification were doing their first. The Netherlands, Ecuador, Ghana, Cameroon and the United States return to the tournament after missing out on the 2018 tournament. Canada returned after 36 years, their only appearance in 1986. Wales made their first appearance in 64 years – a record difference for a European team, their only previous appearance having been in 1958.
Italy, the four-time winners and reigning European champions, failed to qualify for a second consecutive World Cup for the first time in their history, losing in the qualification play-off semi-finals. The Italians were the only former champions to fail to qualify, and the highest-ranked team in the FIFA World Rankings to do so. After Czechoslovakia in 1978, Denmark in 1994 and Greece in 2006, Italy is the fourth team to fail to qualify for the next World Cup and has won the previous UEFA European Championship.[52] Last World Cup host Russia was beaten by Ukraine. But was disqualified from the competition due to the Russian attack.
Chile, the 2015 and 2016 Copa America winners, failed to qualify for the second time in a row. Nigeria, beaten on away goals by Ghana in the final play-off round of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), have qualified for the last three World Cups and six of the last seven. Egypt, Panama, Colombia, Peru, Iceland and Sweden, all of whom qualified for the 2018 World Cup, did not qualify for the 2022 tournament.
Below is the list of qualified teams by region, with the numbers in parentheses indicating the final positions in the FIFA Men’s World Ranking prior to the tournament.
