Goodbye Mr. Chips takes its title from an expression that appears twice throughout the novel. The night before their wedding, Catherine whispers “Goodbye, Mr. Chips” in the belief that, once they are married, she will never be the same again.
The book begins with Mr. Chips, an eighty-five-year-old man. He lives in Mrs. Wicket’s house, and she watches him when he sleeps. He is a retired teacher from Brookfield School across the street from where he now lives.
As he sits by Mrs. Wicket’s fire, he recalls earlier episodes in his life. He was placed in the school in 1870 by a headmaster named Wetherby. Mr. Chipps was a young teacher of Greek and Latin. He made the boy write 100 lines, and after that he didn’t bother him and became an alderman in London. Mr. Chips later taught Colley’s son and grandson.
In middle age he married a young woman named Catherine Bridges. She later died giving birth to her child, who also died. Nevertheless, she impressed him with her vibrant spirit. He briefly became the acting head of the school and sent many of his students to fight in the First World War. When he retired and returned to teaching during World War II. He remembers many of his students, and their names appear as he dies.
