Jitendra Ohad

Jitendra Satish Ohad is an Indian politician from Maharashtra. He was a 3-term Member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly representing Mumbra-Kalva in Thane. He was previously the Cabinet Minister for Medical Education and Horticulture in 2014 and Minister for Housing and Minority Affairs from 2019 to 2022. He has also served as the Guardian Minister of Solapur since 2020. He belongs to the Nationalist Congress Party.

Jitendra Ohad was born to Smt. Lilavati and Shri Satish Ohad. He went to St. John the Baptist High School, Thane. In 1981 he joined B.N Bandodkar College as a science graduate. While in college, he was selected as the secretary of the gymkhana, and went on to become the secretary of the All India Students’ Organization, a non-political organization. Ohad began standing for social causes in 1982 after starting a campaign against rising tuition fees at the University of Mumbai. After completing his studies in marine engineering in 1984-85, he pursued a post-graduate degree in personnel management from the University of Mumbai. Ohad also holds a doctorate from the University of Mumbai, with a dissertation on “History of Socio-Religious Movements in Maharashtra, A Subaltern Alternative Theory”.

Ohad was greatly influenced by Sharad Pawar during his university days and considered him as his mentor. He joined the student wing of the Indian National Congress and held the posts of Chief Secretary and General Secretary in the Maharashtra unit while being the President of the Akhil Bharatiya Vanjara Youth Association. In 1988, he became the Chief Secretary of the Maharashtra Pradesh National Students Union of India (NSUI), after which he was appointed the General Secretary of the All India NSUI in 1991. Formation of Nationalist Congress Party

In response, Pawar and Sangma founded the Nationalist Congress Party in June 1999. Despite the defeat, the new party formed an alliance with the Congress Party to form a coalition government in Maharashtra after the 1999 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections to prevent a Shiv Sena-BJP alliance. After the formation of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Ohad was elected as the first National President of the Youth NCP in 1999. From here he entered mainstream politics and was elected as an MLC in 2002. In March he was re-elected as MLC. 2008 for a period of five years. In 2009, he contested his first election and won from Mumbra-Kalva (Vidhan Sabha constituency) by a wide margin.

In May 2014, he was inducted in Prithviraj Chauhan’s ministry as Minister for Medical Education, Horticulture, Employment Guarantee. As the Horticulture Minister of the state of Maharashtra, Dr. Jitendra Ohad gained popularity when he nominated Amitabh Bachchan as the brand ambassador for the state horticulture. Motivate farmers, promote their production and ensure quality for consumers. In July 2014, Amitabh Bachchan was appointed as the Horticulture Brand Ambassador of Maharashtra.

Dr. Jitendra Ohad started an initiative called “Koffee with Students” to connect and solve the problems of medical students across the state. In the first month alone, cities like Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Aurangabad, Kolhapur, Nagpur, Dhule, Solapur have been covered and effective measures have been taken to improve the conditions of students and staff.

In 2019, he was inducted as Minister for Housing in Thackeray’s ministry. After parting ways with Nawab Malik’s cabinet in March 2022, Ohad was appointed Minister for Minority Development and Endowments.

Ohad belongs to the Vanjari caste and follows Hinduism. He is married to Ruta Samant, daughter of Dutta Samant, a trade union leaderare, famous for leading 200-300 textile mill workers in Bombay city on a year-long strike in 1982, which shut down most of the textile mills. in the city. He has a daughter, Natasha Ohad.

He is credited with popularizing and organizing the festival of Krishna Janmashtami or Dahi Handi through his NGO Sanghrish. Every year lakhs of people visit the fair, especially youth groups from Thane, Mumbai and Navi Mumbai come to participate in the fair by building human pyramids and winning huge prizes. They have also managed to invite human pyramid groups from Spain for this festival and have also set a world record for the tallest pyramid of 9 layers.
